How GPA works
GPA — Grade Point Average — converts each letter grade to a number on the 4.0 scale and weights it by the credit hours of the course. The formula is straightforward: total quality points divided by total credits.
Add prior cumulative GPA + credits to get your new cumulative average across all semesters. Use the "grade needed" mode to figure out exactly what you need to score on a final to lock in a target letter grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?▾
GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (total credits). Each letter grade is mapped to a numeric value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) and multiplied by the credit hours of that course. Add up everything, divide, and you have your GPA on a 4.0 scale.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?▾
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 (A in any class = 4.0). Weighted GPA gives extra points for AP, IB, or honors classes (typically +0.5 or +1.0). High schools commonly report both; colleges usually ask for unweighted.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?▾
Cumulative GPA combines all your past coursework. Multiply your prior GPA by your total prior credits to get your prior quality points. Add current quality points and credits, then divide. We do this automatically when you fill in the "prior GPA" fields.
What grade do I need on my final?▾
Use the "grade needed on final" mode. Enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and your target overall grade. We solve for the score you need on the final to hit that target.
What is a good GPA?▾
It depends on context. 3.0 is generally considered solid; 3.5+ opens doors to most graduate programs and competitive jobs; 3.7+ is honors territory. Top universities often see admitted students with 3.9+ unweighted.
