Why we publish these guides
Calculators give you a number. Sometimes the number is enough — you wanted your BMI, you wanted what 100K is after tax in California, you got the answer. But for decisions that involve trade-offs, the number is only the starting point. Whether to negotiate harder or accept the offer; whether to refinance or stay; whether $30K more in salary is worth moving across the country — these questions need context, examples, and clear thinking, not just a result panel.
These guides exist for the questions calculators can't answer alone. Each one is original writing by the team, sourced from primary references (IRS publications, BLS data, economic research) where applicable. They're updated when the underlying numbers change.
We add new guides as we encounter questions that come up repeatedly in user email. If there's a topic you'd like us to cover in depth, our contact page is the place to suggest it.
