How grades convert to points here

Boston College uses full plus/minus grading, so an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and each modifier moves the average by 0.3 points. Over a four-year transcript the difference between consistently earning A- and consistently earning A is roughly a third of a grade point — enough to cross most honors thresholds.

Pass (P) grades do not count toward the 12-credit letter-graded minimum required for Dean's List eligibility.

Latin honors at Boston College

Boston College awards Latin honors against fixed GPA cutoffs: 3.667 for cum laude, 3.8 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 for summa cum laude.

The advantage of published cutoffs is that the goal is knowable in advance. At a percentile school the bar floats with the graduating class; here it does not, so you can calculate exactly what you need across your remaining courses.

Standing, honors lists, and retakes

Dean's List recognition requires a term GPA of 3.50 or above. It is calculated per term rather than cumulatively, so one strong semester earns it regardless of what came before — and one weak semester loses it regardless of a strong cumulative average.

The part students usually miss

BC switched its Latin honors system from class-percentile to fixed GPA cutoffs in 2021; Dean's List has two published tiers, First Honors (3.700-4.000) and Second Honors (3.500-3.699).
