Brown University does not use plus/minus grading. Each letter maps to a single value, which makes a GPA here less granular than at a school where A- and B+ carry distinct points — one letter grade moves the number further.

Every course is graded A/B/C/No Credit or Satisfactory/No Credit at the student's election each term; grades below A (or S) simply don't count for or against the student in the magna calculation.

Brown does not compute a cumulative GPA at all. The only campus-wide Latin-style honor is magna cum laude, capped at 20% of the graduating class, based on the percentage of A/S-with-distinction grades earned — there is no cum laude or summa cum laude tier.
