Latin honors at Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University awards Latin honors by class rank rather than a fixed GPA. Roughly top 5% summa, top 10% magna, top 15% cum laude, with minimum GPAs set annually per school (Dedman, Cox, Lyle, Meadows, Simmons)
This is the important structural difference from a fixed-cutoff school: there is no GPA you can target with certainty. The bar is set by where your cohort lands, so a 3.85 might earn honors one year and miss the following year. Plan for the percentile, not the number.
Standing, honors lists, and retakes
On repeated courses: If a student earns D+ or lower, they may repeat the course at SMU and the second grade replaces the first in the SMU GPA calculation
One detail specific to this school
For Latin honors, SMU uses whichever is LOWER of a student's SMU-only GPA or their all-college GPA (including transfer coursework) — transfer grades can only hurt, never help
