How grades convert to points here
Tulane University uses full plus/minus grading, so an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and each modifier moves the average by 0.3 points. Over a four-year transcript the difference between consistently earning A- and consistently earning A is roughly a third of a grade point — enough to cross most honors thresholds.
A grade of S (satisfactory) is excluded from GPA and does not count toward Dean's List or the 2.000 GPA required for graduation.
Latin honors at Tulane University
Tulane University awards Latin honors by class rank rather than a fixed GPA. Summa cum laude = top 5% of the graduating class; magna cum laude = next 8%; cum laude = next 12% (i.e. top 25% overall). Numeric thresholds are recalculated every year from that year's May graduates and posted by July 1.
Because honors here are relative, your own GPA only tells you half the story. The other half is the distribution of the graduating class, which is why Tulane University typically publishes the qualifying GPA after the fact rather than in advance.
Standing, honors lists, and retakes
Good academic standing at Tulane University requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Falling below it typically triggers academic warning, then probation, with dismissal only after sustained shortfall — the escalation gives time to recover.
On repeated courses: Only the second (most recent) grade is used to calculate GPA when a course is repeated, though individual schools may authorize additional, more restrictive repeat policies.
The part students usually miss
Tulane recalculates its Latin-honors GPA cutoffs from scratch every year based on that year's May graduating class rather than using fixed thresholds, so the exact GPA needed for cum laude, magna, or summa changes annually.
