University of Chicago awards Latin honors by class rank rather than a fixed GPA. Cum Laude = top 25% (based on a 5-year major-cohort average); Magna Cum Laude = top 15%; Summa Cum Laude = top 8%. The student's final quarter of grades is excluded from this calculation.

This is the important structural difference from a fixed-cutoff school: there is no GPA you can target with certainty. The bar is set by where your cohort lands, so a 3.85 might earn honors one year and miss the following year. Plan for the percentile, not the number.

On repeated courses: Both attempts are averaged into the cumulative GPA when a course is repeated — the new grade does not replace the old one.

One detail specific to this school

UChicago's academic-probation rule combines quarterly GPA with credit load rather than using a single fixed cumulative-GPA cutoff (e.g., a 2.0 GPA on a light 200-unit load can trigger probation the same as a 1.9 GPA on a heavier 300-unit load). Its Dean's List is also percentile-based, restricted to the top 20% of students, not a fixed GPA.
