Latin honors at University of California, San Diego

University of California, San Diego awards Latin honors by class rank rather than a fixed GPA. No more than 14% of graduating seniors receive Latin honors: roughly the top 2% get summa, the next 4% get magna, and the rest up to 14% get cum laude. Requires 72+ UC letter-graded units.

Because honors here are relative, your own GPA only tells you half the story. The other half is the distribution of the graduating class, which is why University of California, San Diego typically publishes the qualifying GPA after the fact rather than in advance.

Standing, honors lists, and retakes

Good academic standing at University of California, San Diego requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Falling below it typically triggers academic warning, then probation, with dismissal only after sustained shortfall — the escalation gives time to recover.

On repeated courses: A D or F can only be repeated for a letter grade, and both the original and repeat grades count toward GPA.

The part students usually miss

UCSD's Dean's List equivalent is called 'Provost Honors' (3.5+ UC GPA in 12+ graded units, no D/F/NP). Only A, B, and C grades can take plus/minus modifiers — there's no D+ or D- — and an A+, when awarded, carries no extra grade points beyond a plain A.
