How grades convert to points here

University of Michigan uses full plus/minus grading, so an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and each modifier moves the average by 0.3 points. Over a four-year transcript the difference between consistently earning A- and consistently earning A is roughly a third of a grade point — enough to cross most honors thresholds.

Grades of P, F, CR, NC, S, U, NR, I, Y, and VI are excluded from GPA calculation.

Standing, honors lists, and retakes

Good academic standing at University of Michigan requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Falling below it typically triggers academic warning, then probation, with dismissal only after sustained shortfall — the escalation gives time to recover.

Dean's List recognition requires a term GPA of 3.50 or above. It is calculated per term rather than cumulatively, so one strong semester earns it regardless of what came before — and one weak semester loses it regardless of a strong cumulative average.

On repeated courses: Repeating a course previously graded A+ through C (or P/CR/S) earns no additional credit or honor points — the retake is marked 'Not for Credit' on the transcript. Repeating a C- through D- grade does earn additional honor points, but no additional degree credit.

The part students usually miss

LSA at Michigan requires a separate minimum 2.0 GPA computed only from the student's major/minor coursework, in addition to the standard 2.0 cumulative/term GPA, in order to graduate.
