Wordle helper that actually understands Wordle
Most 5-letter word lists just dump everything alphabetically. We give you Wordle-aware filters: position-by-position pattern, must-contain (yellow letters), and must-exclude (grey letters) — so you can solve any puzzle in 2-3 narrow searches.
Results are limited to 1,000 to keep the page snappy. Add more constraints if you see the cap — usually 2 yellow + 1 grey is enough to narrow Wordle to under 20 candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this for Wordle?▾
Use the position pattern with letters you know (e.g. "_a__o"), put yellow letters in "must contain", and grey letters in "exclude". You'll get every valid 5-letter English word that fits.
How many 5-letter words exist in English?▾
About 9,000–13,000 depending on the dictionary. Wordle uses a curated subset of ~2,300 common words for solutions, but accepts ~12,000 for guesses. Our list comes from a comprehensive English dictionary of ~275K words.
What is the best Wordle starting word?▾
Mathematically, words rich in common letters (E, A, R, O, T, N, I, S) maximize information. Popular openers include CRANE, SLATE, RAISE, IRATE, and ROATE. We don't recommend a single "best" — variety helps avoid pattern blindness.
Can I use this for the NYT Mini, Quordle, or Connections?▾
For 5-letter games (Wordle, Quordle, Octordle, Heardle word variants) — yes. For NYT Mini (variable lengths) and Connections (categorization) we have other tools coming soon.
How does the pattern work?▾
Use letters for known positions and "_" for unknown. So "_a__o" means: any letter, then A, then two unknowns, then O. The pattern is case-insensitive and must be exactly 5 characters.
